I went vegan after trying to watch the documentary Earthlings in 2009. I had dabbled in vegetarianism as a teen but had gotten away from thinking too much about it. The first few minutes of Earthlings changed that for me, instantly and lastingly. I had sought out the film because I knew I needed to know. I had just become a mom and I knew I needed to think more about the world around me and the future.
In 2009, there were a handful of vegan restaurants and options in the Ottawa area. I began to experiment in my own kitchen out of curiosity and necessity. Eventually, I stumbled upon the big world of cashew cheeses and I never looked back.
In 2013 I began selling my cultured cashew cheeses, and eventually developed the meltable style that I make today After a brief hiatus, Mad Faux Cheese came back to Ottawa in 2017.
